The report uses data to depict the ‘year in review’ for 2019- it shows how the company is doing by comparing the past 10 years, from 2009-2019. It does this by using data visualizations such as bar graphs/charts and line graphs. The first is a bar graph which shows the-10 year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for Estee Lauder as well as one of their competitors (Global Prestige Beauty) and the market, S&P 500 Consumer Staples Index. Estee Lauder’s growth rate at 8% is nearly double that of Global Prestige Beauty (5%) and nearly triple that of S&P 500 (3%).
The diluted net earnings per common share is depicted in the next visualization and shows that it has been steadily increasing from 2010-2019. It shows a drop from 2017-2018; however the visualization also includes a line for the EPS adjusted for sales orders, and/or restructuring and other charges, and that shows a consistent increase.
Horizontal bar charts are used for the next two visualizations, and they show net sales by product category and net sales by region. A quick glance at the sales by product gallery chart and one can easily see that sales has increased from 2009 to 2019 for every product, particularly makeup and skincare. The net sales by region have also done very well in the past 10 years; APAC & EMEA more-than-doubling in sales and the Americas showing an increase from $3,421 to $4,741.
The last data visualization is a line graph showing the cumulative ten-year total stockholder return from June 2009 to June 2019 for Estee Lauder, S&P 500 index, and S&P Consumer Staples index. All three show increases, however Estee Lauder has a higher stockholder return that really skyrocketed from 2017 to 2019. This shows that Estee Lauder is exceeding industry and market averages.
The presentation appeals to readers by showing data using clear, concise visualizations. They kept it simple and easy-to-understand, including essential data only, and reducing the noise in the visualizations. I think Estee Lauder did a great job presenting this information to stockholders- they made sure the audience has all the relevant information that they need/want to know while making it very easy to absorb. I think that the use of line graphs and bar charts depicted the data clearly, and the labels, colors (blues and grays), title, and relevant information underneath the visualizations all help to deliver a clear, organized, positive message to stockholders pertaining to the company’s performance.
